Thrifted Pinterest - Little Ladies

This last week, I got to attend a Stonecroft ladies outreach luncheon that I help to organize.  It's a monthly get-together, and even though I'm the youngest person on the board  (the next youngest person is in her 60's), it's actually a lot of fun.  Of course, if you asked me to explain why I enjoy it so much, I'd have a hard time putting that into words.  But I really do enjoy attending, and having the privilege of getting to know all the older ladies I volunteer with in the process!

I took advantage of the warmer temperatures this week (and getting to dress up for the luncheon) to recreate this pin from the Gap lookbook with a few of my 31 pieces:

Someone wasn't too happy about my taking pictures!  Can you spot the 'disapproving audience?'

That's okay, the other kiddo seemed to have no problem hamming it up for the camera...

I love the painterly print on this dress, and it was a steal for only $7, but I've actually only worn it once.  I included it in my outfit rotation for the month so that it could maybe see the light of day a little more regularly!  It's too pretty to just languish in the dark recesses of my closet.

Outfit Details:
Shirt: NY & Co., $11 (clearance)
Dress: via 1/2 of 1/2, $7
Necklace: secondhand via eBay, $3
Shoes: via Plato's Closet resale, $8

Grand Total: $29

31(squared) - Lessons Learned

Lesson #1 in self-taken shots: make sure you actually set your timer.

Lesson #2: make sure you actually check the framing.

Lesson #3 (this one's more of a guideline...): if your dolphin mood ring happens to match the exact color of your house, take a picture!

Here's some more outfit shots from the weekend:

Went to a certain nephew's pirate birthday party, turns out my necklace matched the decor!

Fair Trade Friday - Badala

I thought I'd take this Friday to introduce you guys to another amazing company, called Badala.

Here's the introductory video by the woman that founded this amazing company.  Her words are so much better than mine would be:

First off, am I the only one that wanted to pinch all those beautiful babies' cheeks?  Seriously, seeing all the good that Badala is doing in these children's and women's lives just makes my heart happy!  Beyond that, all the products they offer are just as beautiful as the smiles of the artisans that make them.  I picked out some of my favorites, and there's a lot to choose from!

Broken Earth Infinity Scarf in Charcoal
This scarf is just too pretty.  That smoky grey needs a place in my closet, and since it's a lightweight jersey, it would be perfect for spring (if we ever thaw out from all these winter storms!).

Kiota Earrings
In that same color family are these earrings.  That speckled quail egg stone almost reminds me of Rorschach tests, and I can't stop looking at them.

Kitenge Sunrise Trio
Do people still use the term 'arm party?'  Because these definitely qualify as party worthy.  Those vibrant reds and oranges just pop, and would dress up almost any outfit.  Added bonus: right now this trio of bracelets is on sale!

Mara Sunrise Necklace
Can you tell that I'm gravitating to certain colors?  This necklace echoes the colors of the sunrise alluded to in its name, and there's even matching earrings available on the site as well (but there's only 3 left, so if you want them, get them ASAP!).

Horizon Pillow in Pacific Blue
One place I don't excel (one of many, trust me) is decorating my home.  I mean, sure, stuff matches, but it's not really anything I just love.  This pillow changes all of that.  I know exactly where I'd put it, what it would coordinate with, and that I would just love looking at that hand-dyed design all day.  These pillows, and some other home goods like these woven baskets and carved utensils, are available for pre-order on the site, so put your order in now if you love them as much as I do!

Thrifted Pinterest - 31(squared) Style!

Well, it's been another couple days, and I'm actually having some fun with remixing all these clothes.  Not gonna lie, I might have a little bit of Goodwill withdrawals, simply because that's usually where I go during my 'mommy needs some alone time' nights, but saving up that money for Love146 is worth so much more than that!  I can always go somewhere else... the library maybe?  Aaaaanyways, here's what I wore the past few days:

Oh, look, a visitor!

"Where's your belly?"

"Where's your hair?"

Candid camera, kid!
Yesterday, the hubby and I went out to dinner for his birthday, so I picked out one of the dresses I'd put into rotation.  I used this photo as my outfit inspiration:

And I went pretty literal with my interpretation:

That's the last few days so far!  Come back next week to see how I remix the rest of my 31 pieces!  Oh, and did you see this invitation for a local clothing swap a friend and I are hosting?  If you're in the area, you should stop by!

Local Ladies, you're invited!

31(squared) - The Weekend

Well, I began my 31x31 challenge with a bang!  It looked amazing outside on Saturday, the temperatures were mild, and there was even new growth in our yard:

So, I dressed accordingly.  It's always easier to get dressed up when it's nice outside, at least for me!

Of course, then winter storm Titan made it's way through our area, bringing the wonderful new weather term "thundersleet," and now it looks like this outside:

So, as much as I love you guys, there is no way I'm going outside to take pictures.  You'll just have to make do with some selfies in my dirty bathroom mirror.  Maybe I'll venture outside again after Friday, when it's supposed to be 60 degrees again!  (Seriously, weather, go home, you're drunk.  Sleep it off and call me when it's actually Spring.)

Sunday, perfect day for leggings.

Monday, a great day for jammies and possibly cocoa...

30X30, for a Purpose.

Sometimes, or possibly most of the time, I like to daydream.  My mind wanders into these alternate futures for my life, where I've become a fashion designer, or best friends with Jennifer Lawrence, or the mother of an adopted child.  I smile as I dream of how I would've gotten to those places, what the journey to get there might look like.  I daydream about the outfits I would wear, the runway collections I might have made, or the places I might travel to.  And then there are the days, like today, when my imagination is overtaken with a more frightening reality.

Yesterday was a day to Shine a Light on Slavery, and literally thousands of people participated in End It Movement's campaign.  There were red X's all over my Facebook feed, news stations interviewed people participating, and modern day slavery was at the forefront of many people's minds.

But it was just one day, in the days and years of exploitation many of these victims endure.

Sometimes, even in my attempt to keep most of my blog content light-hearted (it's about clothes after all!), there are days that I don't want to write about my outfits.  Today is one of those days.  I don't want to sit in front of my computer and try to find light-hearted words to describe what I'm wearing.  I want to scream and rant and cry and possibly punch something because there are so many huge issues to tackle in our world today.  I want to buy a one way ticket to Nepal and break into brothels and protect these children.  I want to wander the streets of New York and show real love to the 12 and 13 year old girls that have believed the lie that their pimp loves them as he sends them out to do his 'business.'  I want to buy each and every piece of jewelry that Starfish Project offers, so that the women that have been rescued from a life of exploitation can support themselves in their new life.

But, instead, I am a (mostly) stay-at-home-mom with two kids to raise and love, with limited financial resources.  One thing I can do?  Get dressed every morning.  A good friend and I are starting a 30X30 Clothing Challenge tomorrow, and continuing through the whole month of March.  Basically, we each picked out 31 (we added a freebie in there, since there's 31 days in the month!) pieces of clothing, and that's what we'll have to choose from when we get dressed every day.  Another part of the challenge is that we aren't going to buy anything new during this month.  It's a practice in being happy with the contents of our closet that we already have, as well as learning new ways to mix the pieces we picked instead of relying on the same combinations every time we wear them.  We're saving up our shopping money throughout the month, and at the end, we're planning on making a donation to Love146 to help support those that are going out and rescuing these precious lives.

I'll go ahead and share with you the clothes that I picked out for these 31 days, as well as a few caveats:

What's Not Included: Belts, undershirts, tights, scarves, jewelry, and coats (I really only have 2, and never really consider them part of an 'outfit,' they're just for warmth!)

What is included: pretty much everything else, including shoes!

My freebie: I am allowing myself a little wiggle room, in that if I manage to finish one of my sewing projects, it can be added into the mix.  I only have like 3 or 4 things in the works right now (or 5, or 100...):

Seriously, it's like a fabric explosion in my craft corner right now!!
So, here's the rundown:

Here's all 31!

L to R: Aeropostale (clearance), black leggings from Wal-Mart, thrifted NY&Co jeans (DIY'ed to skinnies)... I didn't include a picture of a dark wash pair of flares, they were my #31 freebie added later!

Nude heels, black boots, and leopard flats all from Plato's Closet resale, studded loafers from Rack Room Shoes (clearance), thrifted Red BCBG Girls wedges

Clockwise from top: DIY circle skirt from thrifted fabric, gifted houndstooth skirt, thrifted Cato floral skirt

L to R: Print dress via 1/2 of 1/2, thrifted polka dots (DIY alterations), thrifted blue dress

Clockwise from top L: Target (clearance), JC Penney, thrifted, Old Navy LS tee, turtleneck from clothing swap, American Apparel tee via Plato's Closet resale

L to R: thrifted Coldwater Creek button-down, Ann Taylor top via 1/2 of 1/2, NY&Co white button-down

Clockwise from top L: grey sweater from Harp's (local grocery store, randomly enough!), thrifted black Banana Republic sweater, leopard Chaps sweater from Kohl's (clearance), striped sweater from Sears (clearance)

L to R: insanely old Old Navy jacket (DIY'ed to sleeveless), Aeropostale top (clearance), thrifted cape/sweater thingie
And that's it!  I went with mostly black/white and blue, with some other colors mixed in... I'm curious to see how all of these will come together (as well as how I'll dress myself for warmth when this impending ice storm hits)!

I'd love it if you'd join me in this campaign!  If you don't want to remix your wardrobe, maybe consider a shopping hiatus, and just saving up the money you would have spent this month?  It can be as little as $1 per day, and every little bit helps!  A recent blog post on Love146's website sums it up perfectly: "a red ‘X’ [or a bunch of outfits] won’t end slavery. But the people who wear it might." Be a part of this movement, and help to end slavery!
